A black PlayStation 5 launching on the same day as Grand Theft Auto VI would be a major move for Sony, potentially giving fans a fresh console design to celebrate one of gaming’s most anticipated releases.
The key question is whether Sony is actually preparing a new black PS5 for GTA 6’s launch, or whether the story refers to a rumored special edition, a third-party customisation, or existing black accessories.
The latest reports confirm that the console is real, but it comes with an important regional restriction.
What You Need To Know:
1. A Midnight Black PS5 Digital Edition: Sony has announced an all black version of the PS5 Digital Edition, replacing the familiar white exterior with a Midnight Black finish. It also comes with a matching black DualSense controller.
2. Release date: November 19, 2026
The console is scheduled to launch on the same day as Grand Theft Auto VI. Its announced Japanese price is ¥55,000, approximately US$350, although the actual exchange rate may vary.
3. A digital-only console: The system has an 825GB SSD and a matching black DualSense controller. It does not include a disc drive but a separate compatible disc drive is required to play physical games. Sony is also releasing a matching black disc-drive accessory separately for ¥11,980.
4. Japan exclusive restrictions: The console is restricted to Japanese system language and a PlayStation account registered to Japan. Sony has not confirmed a Western release of this model.
Will it be available in the United States?:
Not officially, according to the current announcement. The new model is exclusive to Japan and has restrictions requiring a Japanese region PlayStation account and Japanese system language. American buyers should not assume they can purchase and use it like a standard U.S. PS5.
Will GTA 6 run better on this black PS5?:
No performance upgrade has been announced. The black model is essentially a cosmetic variation of the digital PS5, rather than a more powerful console. GTA 6 is scheduled for November 19, 2026, on PS5 and PS5 Pro, as confirmed by the official PlayStation listing.
DawentsIT Takeaway: Sony is pairing a stylish, lower priced Japanese market black PS5 with GTA 6’s launch. For U.S. fans, the biggest disappointment is that this particular console is not being offered domestically at the announced price.
