Your Daily Dose Of Technology News – September 23, 2026.
1. Google Faces A €403 Million Privacy Fine Over Location Data:
Google is facing a €403 million ($463 million) fine from Ireland’s Data Protection Commission over its historical handling of users’ location information.
The investigation concerned Google’s:
– Web & App Activity
– Location History
– Location Accuracy
between 2018 and early 2020.

The Irish regulator concluded that Google violated several GDPR requirements involving the lawfulness, fairness and transparency of its location data processing, as well as data retention and accountability requirements.
Google has argued that the case concerns historical policies and says it has since introduced stronger controls, automatic deletion features and less precise location data practices.
The regulator has also ordered Google to bring the relevant processing into compliance within six months.
Location data remains one of the most valuable categories of personal information.
As AI becomes more integrated into search, phones and personal assistants, the amount of contextual information technology companies can potentially process is increasing.
That makes questions around:
What data is collected = Why is it collected = How clearly is the user informed = How long is it retained?

2. Google’s New Googlebook Pushes Gemini Into The Laptop:
Google is also entering a new phase of laptop computing with its Googlebook platform. The first Googlebook systems start at around $899 and are built around Google’s Gemini AI ecosystem.
The concept is different from traditional Chromebooks.
Google is attempting to make Gemini deeply integrated into the desktop experience, including:
* AI assistance
* Android phone integration
* Phone apps appearing on the computer
* Access to phone files and photos
* Gemini-powered workflows
* Cross-device functionality
ASUS is among the manufacturers introducing Googlebook hardware. Google’s strategy effectively creates another front in the battle between Windows PCs, Macs and AI-native computers.
3. YouTube Unveils A Major New Wave Of AI Creator Tools:
YouTube used its annual Made on YouTube event in New York to announce a broad collection of AI-powered tools for creators and viewers.
One of the most interesting announcements is conversational video editing. Instead of manually going through a timeline, creators will be able to tell AI what they want changed using natural language.
For example, a creator could ask the system to:
– Select the best takes from several recordings
– Remove pauses and unwanted sections
– Add music and transitions
– Add text overlays
– Help assemble footage into a finished video
– Make further changes through a conversation
Creators will still be able to return to the conventional editing timeline and make manual changes. The conversational editing feature is planned for YouTube Shorts and YouTube Create in early 2027.

YouTube is also adding AI assistance directly to YouTube Studio, including tools for:
– Giving feedback on video drafts
– Generating thumbnails adapted to a channel
– Testing up to three versions of a video
– Improving creator workflows
YouTube also announced AI-powered comment moderation and expanded likeness-protection technology combining voice and facial detection.
YouTube is also changing how viewers discover content:
Another notable announcement is Custom Feeds, which will allow U.S. users to create personalised homepage feeds around interests such as documentaries, DIY, or other topics.
YouTube is also expanding its shopping features. Its affiliate shopping program is expected to reach 35 countries by the end of 2026, while more than 1.3 million creators are already enrolled.
Why It Counts: YouTube is increasingly turning AI into an end-to-end production assistant rather than merely a recommendation or captioning tool. The company is essentially trying to make the entire creator workflow idea development, editing, thumbnails, audience management and commerce more AI-assisted.
4. Apple Puts Its New AI-Focused Macs On Sale:
Apple has now begun selling its latest Mac mini and Mac Studio computers.
The new lineup includes:
– Mac mini with M6
– Mac mini with M5 Pro
– Mac Studio with M5 Max
– Mac Studio with M5 Ultra
Apple says the systems are designed for demanding workloads including AI development and professional applications.
But the larger story is Apple’s attempt to position the Mac as an AI-computing platform, not simply a traditional desktop computer.
Reuters reports that Apple is specifically targeting businesses and AI developers that want to run large models locally rather than paying cloud providers for continuous AI inference. Some high-end configurations can cost around $20,000.
Apple has demonstrated a trillion parameter AI model running across four Mac Studios connected to a single wall outlet.
The company is effectively challenging the idea that serious AI work must happen inside enormous cloud data centers.
Apple’s argument is based heavily on:
– Energy efficiency
– Unified memory
– Local processing
– Lower recurring inference costs
– Control over hardware and software
This puts Apple into more direct competition with the AI infrastructure ecosystem dominated by companies such as Nvidia and Microsoft.
5. Microsoft Disrupts An AI-Powered Cybercrime Platform:
One of today’s most significant cybersecurity stories involves EvilTokens, a cybercrime platform that used AI to automate large portions of phishing and financial fraud.
Microsoft says the service was linked to more than 12,000 compromised email inboxes across more than 10,000 organisations worldwide.
The platform wasn’t simply an AI chatbot that generated phishing emails.
It could reportedly analyse compromised inboxes and help attackers identify:
– Employees responsible for financial transactions
– Managers and organisational relationships
– Payment information
– Vendor relationships
– Potential targets for impersonation
– Situations where fraudulent requests were most likely to succeed
The service reportedly cost customers $1,500 initially plus $500 per month. Microsoft and partners seized 50 websites associated with the operation and disabled more than 150 additional domains. UK police also arrested two men allegedly connected to the operation.
Why It Counts:
The important development is the way AI changes the economics of cybercrime. Previously, an attacker might have needed significant human effort to understand a compromised company’s organisational structure. AI can dramatically accelerate that process.
Microsoft’s investigators say criminals can potentially understand the contents of a compromised inbox in minutes rather than days. This means organisations increasingly need to treat email-account compromise as a serious business-fraud risk, not merely a credential problem.
Odds And Ends:
6. Robots Are Moving Into More Ordinary Jobs:
Robotics is also becoming more practical and specialised. Canadian tire retailer Kal Tire has deployed the first commercial installation of PitPro Automation’s robotic tire changing system in Calgary.

The startup says its machine can change a complete set of four tires in under 15 minutes. The company sees tire servicing as an attractive application because the work is physically demanding and the industry faces labor shortages.
This illustrates an important robotics trend: Rather than immediately replacing entire occupations, companies are increasingly automating specific repetitive or physically demanding tasks.
7. AI Safety Concerns Around Children Intensify:
Former Google Trust & Safety chief Tom Siegel has warned that rapidly deployed AI systems could create serious risks for children.
Speaking to Reuters, Siegel argued that the technology industry could repeat mistakes made during the social media era if AI products aimed at young users are deployed without stronger safeguards.
He has joined Common Sense Media as the first executive director of its Youth AI Safety Institute, which aims to develop standards for evaluating AI’s effects on minors.
The concerns raised include:
– Age verification
– AI companions
– Emotional dependency
– Exposure to inappropriate content
– Over reliance on AI
– Reduced critical thinking
– Potential psychological harms
These are concerns and warnings from Siegel and others, rather than established conclusions about every AI product or every child. The broader debate is increasingly moving toward how AI companies should independently evaluate products before releasing them to younger users.
8. OpenAI’s vision For AI Hardware Is Becoming Clearer:
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has previously described a future in which AI devices can understand the user’s environment continuously.
But today’s smart-glasses discussion highlights an important part of that vision: local AI processing.
The idea is that an AI device capable of seeing and hearing much of a person’s environment shouldn’t necessarily have to send all of that information to a cloud server.
Local processing could provide:
* Greater privacy
* Lower latency
* Less dependence on internet connectivity
* Reduced cloud costs
* Better control over personal data
Reuters reports that Altman has argued that highly personal always-on AI systems will eventually need more local processing.
This could make AI chips inside phones and wearable devices increasingly important.
9. Qualcomm Pushes Agentic AI Into Smartphones:
Qualcomm is using its Snapdragon Summit in Hawaii to push a new generation of smartphones built around on-device agentic AI.
The company announced two flagship mobile platforms:
– Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6
– Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6
Both are designed around Qualcomm’s new approach to smartphones as AI agents rather than simply phones with AI applications.
The platforms use Qualcomm’s Oryon CPU, Adreno GPU and Hexagon NPU, with the new chips built on a 2nm process. Qualcomm says the Extreme version is its most powerful mobile platform yet.
The standard Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 features:

– Oryon CPU cores reaching up to 5 GHz
– Up to 20% better performance-per-watt for certain agentic AI workloads
– Improved AI-powered photography
– AI-assisted graphics
– Advanced gaming capabilities
– Up to 14.8 Gbps peak 5G download speeds
– Support for Wi-Fi 8 technologies
Qualcomm’s broader goal is to let AI perform tasks locally and adapt to a user’s preferences without everything being sent to the cloud.
Phones using the new platforms are expected from companies including HONOR, iQOO, Motorola, OnePlus, OPPO, REDMI, RedMagic, vivo and Xiaomi.
