1.In Meta news: It’s been a few days since Mark Zuckerberg announced Facebook’s new name, but while Wall Street internet analysts are cheering this change as a bold move, not everyone’s on board.
The guy who coined the term “metaverse” is distancing himself from Facebook’s Meta plans. Neal Stephenson, author of the sci-fi novel “Snow Crash,” has previously said he was just “making shit up” when he first wrote about the metaverse — and that he has no business relationship with Meta.
Gotta be quicker than that… Facebook can’t have the @meta handle on Instagram, because a motorbike magazine from Denver already uses it. Instead, it’ll have to settle for @wearemeta.
Tech execs are expressing concern. Google’s former CEO spoke out about the metaverse, saying it’s “not necessarily the best thing for human society.”
2.Microsoft surpassed Apple as the world’s most-valuable company. The tech giant dethroned Apple after supply chain issues cost the company $6 billion.
3.Mailchimp employees are “devastated” by the bonuses they got after the company’s sale to Intuit. Employees, who had no equity in the company, were promised big paychecks after the sale. But many are disappointed by the amount — and some even plan to quit.
4.Netflix staffers have filed a labor complaint over the Dave Chappelle controversy. The employees are accusing the streaming giant of retaliating against them for speaking out about its handling of the comedian’s new special.
5.Gopuff workers are striking. Workers at one of the $15 billion startup’s busiest warehouses are protesting pay, effectively shutting down the Philadelphia store and rerouting orders to other locations.
6.Tesla is recalling nearly 2,800 vehicles. A potential suspension problem that could increase the risk of crashes has resulted in a recall of thousands of Model Y and Model 3 cars.
7.Leaked documents explain why TikTok is more appealing than Instagram’s Reels. An internal study found that users prefer TikTok over Reels, Instagram’s short-video feature.Participants in the study said Instagram’s video feature is “stale, boring, or repetitive,” and that TikTok is more fun.
8.Toyota is copying Tesla’s controversial steering yoke for its electric SUV. Toyota’s first fully electric vehicle, the BZ4X, will have the option for a rectangular, airplane-style steering yoke like those found in some Teslas.
