Sony has officially turned the PlayStation 5 into a free television platform with the launch of “Live TV on PS5” in the United States. The service launched on August 31, 2026, and gives PS5 owners access to more than 100 live, ad-supported channels, along with a growing library of on-demand entertainment.
What Is Live TV On PS5?: The new service is operated by Sony Pictures Television and uses a FAST (Free Ad-Supported Streaming TV) model. That means users don’t pay a monthly subscription; instead, advertisements support the programming.
Importantly, Sony isn’t simply adding another streaming app to the PS5. Live TV is integrated directly into the console’s Media section, making it possible to switch from gaming to television without additional hardware or a separate download.

Sports Are A Major Part Of The Service: The platform isn’t limited to old TV shows and movies. Sony is also bringing sports programming from partners including FOX Sports, NASCAR, NBC Sports Now, UFC and the NFL Channel.
The NFL Channel, for example, provides a free 24/7 channel with game-day coverage, replays and original programming.
There are also channels covering MMA, football, hockey, motorsports, golf, boxing and soccer.

Is It Really Free?: Yes. Sony says Live TV on PS5 is completely free to watch and doesn’t require a paid subscription. There are advertisements, however, which is how the service is monetised.
You also don’t need to download a separate application.
You do need a PlayStation account, and Sony’s service requires that account to be connected to a Sony Pictures CORE account.
How To Access It:
On a U.S. PS5:
– Open the Media tab from the PS5 home screen.
– Select Live TV on PS5.
– Choose “Log In With My PlayStation Account.”
– Connect your Sony Pictures CORE account if prompted.
– Start watching.
What About Other Countries?:
For now, the service is available in the United States. Sony says Canada is next, while it continues to explore additional markets. Sony also plans to bring the experience to BRAVIA televisions later in 2026.
This is a significant move because Sony is transforming the PS5 from primarily a gaming machine into a broader entertainment hub.
The strategy puts Sony directly into the same general FAST-TV space occupied by services such as Tubi, Pluto TV and The Roku Channel, but with a major advantage: Sony already has a huge installed base of PS5 consoles.
It also gives Sony another way to monetise PlayStation users through advertising while simultaneously promoting content from Sony Pictures and partners. Sony specifically says the platform is designed to connect advertisers with PlayStation’s highly engaged audience.
